Why? I dunno.

Even Jim Gaffigan doesn’t know either.

At least, someone made it their own...

I always found the ad campaigns for the Toyota Cavalier hilarious, they marketed the damn thing like it was some sort of American legend like the Mustang or the Charger.

Here’s one with like 35,000 miles for $900 or so USD.

I remember one of the comments of the CMs saying that he’s never felt so patriotic over a Cavalier!

Saturn was supposed to be a an all new world car, Honda and Toyota killer, it would have been had GM not parts binned it to death. The first models weren’t bad much better than the Cavilier, Shadow/Sundance twins or Escort. Then Chrysler put out the Neon, and ofcourse they were never as good as the Civic or Tecel, cheaper but not better.

Couple reasons. GM and Toyota were allied at the time, and Toyota agreed to help GM sell some of their crap in Japan (also, I believe the Japanese government agreed to take in a certain amount of American car exports per year to keep a lid on protectionist oriented interests on this side of the Pacific). Also, PR - it helped GM sell Saturns to Americans. Didn’t matter how few they sold in Japan, GM could claim the car was so good, they were sending it to do battle with Toyota and Honda on their home turf.
